Your Role on the Team
Position Summary: The Decedent Affairs Specialist, reporting to the
Patient Relations Manager, is responsible for overseeing the care
and management of deceased patients at UCI Medical Center. This
role involves facilitating all aspects related to a deceased
patient, including legal reporting requirements, supporting
families, coordinating with physicians on death certificate
attestation, arranging tissue donations, and managing autopsy
requests when necessary. The Decedent Affairs Lead also handles
data entry, ensures the timely and appropriate release of remains
to the correct entities, and coordinates with various departments
such as Pathology, police, the Coroner's Office, risk management,
and social services.In addition, the Decedent Affairs Specialist
maintains communication with external agencies, including the
Coroner's Office, Health Department, County Clerk-Recorder, Public
Administrator's Office, and mortuaries. To ensure regulatory
compliance, the Decedent Affairs Lead stays current on relevant
issues and provides training as needed. The position may also
require performing administrative duties within Patient Experience
as necessary.

Qualifications:
- Resourcefulness to identify and search for information that is
not readily available
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel
- Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the
successful performance of assigned duties
- Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the
job
- Minimum three (3) years prior experience in healthcare or
bereavement setting
- High degree of professionalism to recognize the need for
discretion and maintain confidentiality
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication
skills
- Demonstrated skill and ability to analyze, organize, and
prioritize work assignments
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
- Ability to think critically, problem solve, and provide
appropriate recommendations for optimal outcomes
- Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the
workload
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships across the Health System
- Ability to appropriately deal with stressful situations and
individuals while remaining calm and professionalPreferred
Qualifications:
- Prior funeral home/mortuary/healthcare decedent affairs
experience
- Prior experience in patient satisfaction/customer service
- Knowledge of University and Medical Center organizations,
policies, procedures and forms
- Demonstrated working knowledge of medical terminology.
