The Space Components and Strategic Businesses Unit is seeking a
Principal / Sr. Principal Structural Engineer (level 3/4) to join
our Engineering team. This position will be based in San Diego, CA,
but may be located in Devens, MA, Beltsville, MD, or Oxnard,
Goleta, or Commerce, in California. Hybrid work-from-home / onsite
could be an option for the right candidate.
Overview
The Structural Engineer for this role will work with the Business
Unit (BU) engineering team to develop and implement new analysis
methods, codes, standards, and tools to improve accuracy while
reducing cost and analysis lead time. This individual will be
responsible for researching existing analytical tools and methods
used across the business and identifying strengths and weaknesses
of the various toolsets. Using critical thinking and
problem-solving skills, the Principal Structural Engineer will work
with individual Operating Unit (OU) teams to identify opportunities
to optimize analytical processes in order to best support timely
delivery of accurate and affordable analysis results to internal
and external customers. This team member will assess and document
analysis methods by product area and/or value stream used by
individual OUs and share these tools and best practices with the
broader BU team. A main focus for this role will be developing and
maintaining manuals and training materials for analysis
best-practice focus areas such as accuracy, repeatability, and
affordability.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate proficiency in the following
areas:
FEM / FEA tools and methods (NX Siemens Nastran and/or Dassault
Systems Abaqus a plus)
Strong background in coding and programming, with experience with
one or more of the following coding languages: Python, Java, C and
C++, JavaScript, SQL, VBA.
Ability to interpret and understand structural engineering
specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite
structural materials.
Experience with and broad knowledge of integrated systems,
electromechanical assemblies, structural materials, and bonded and
soldered interfaces.
Familiarity with analysis and simulation methods for mechanical,
thermal, vibration, and shock performance in static and dynamic
environments.
Experience with analysis for damage tolerance, durability, dynamic
loading, stability and stress fatigue in order to determine design
allowables.
Ability to carefully analyze complex problems and develop
innovative solutions.
Broad knowledge of industry practices.
Ensures solutions are consistent with organization objectives.
Must be able to work independently and have strong organizational
skills.
Skillfully perform complex professional tasks and apply regular use
of ingenuity and innovation.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to
effectively and clearly present technical approaches and
findings.
This position may be filled as a Principal (Level 3) or a Senior
Principal (Level 4) depending upon candidate education, experience
and qualifications. (All locations are Geodiff E)
Basic Qualifications for a Level 3:
Bachelor's Degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited
university and 5+ years of engineering process development and/or
project management experience OR Master's Degree in STEM discipline
with 3+ year experience
Proficiency in space and aerospace structural analysis of
composites structures, including bonded joints, sandwich panels and
metals
Proficiency in finite element analysis and composite laminate
theory
Skilled in Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, Outlook,
PowerPoint, Project)
Ability to obtain DoD Secret clearance
Basic Qualifications for a Level 4:
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with, and knowledge of hardware design and manufacturing
processes for space & aerospace applications
Proficiency in finite element analysis using Siemens specific
tools.
Proficiency with programming in Excel using VBA.
Proficiency in Femap, NASTRAN, Altair Hyperworks, and ESI VA
One
Proficiency writing API's in FEMAP
Experience with development and implementation of AI algorithms and
user environments
Experience with NX and Team Center software platforms
Salary Range: $104,600.00 - $157,000.00Salary Range 2: $129,700.00
- $194,500.00
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to
base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual
contributions as well as allow employees to share in company
results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be
eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman
